Purvanchal Pragati

"We are very happy to partner with Thomas and the Learn for Life Foundation team to empower the indigenous communities in Northeast India through the establishment of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) and computer training programs in our education institutions in the region"

Fr. Paul Coelho, Director

Education in Northeastern States

The  Purvanchal Pragati Samaj operates across several northeastern states, including Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, and Nagaland. They sponsor a network of 29 schools, many with hostels for boys and girls and 3 colleges. The focus has always that of supporting local communities in their struggles to overcome the challenges that impede their growth and development. In practice, it means establishing ways to promote education, better sanitation and health, social and self-employment skills, and job accessibility.

Purvanchal Pragati Samaj sponsors schools that are committed to excellence, focusing on the all-round development of students. These schools integrate sports, performing arts, value education, and service, as integral components of their school program.

About Purvanchal Pragati Samaj

Their mission is to uplift marginalized communities by addressing key areas such as:

  • Education: Enhancing access to quality education from primary to higher levels. PPS has established 29 schools and 3 colleges, providing educational opportunities to underserved communities.

  • Community Outreach: Implementing programs that foster community development and well-being. Notable initiatives include Self-Help Groups, Women's Weaving Cooperatives, Income Generation Training

  • Legal Aid: Providing legal assistance to protect the rights of indigenous populations, ensuring they are aware of and can assert their entitlements.

  • Social Research: Conducting studies to inform policies and programs tailored to community needs, focusing on areas such as fair pricing and rights assertion.

  • Language & Culture: Preserving and promoting indigenous languages and cultural heritage. PPS has established the North East Institute for Language and Culture (NEILAC) to protect, preserve, and promote local indigenous languages and cultures.

Higher Education

The Higher Education is still a major challenge in Northeast India. This is largely due to the lack of governmental support and the absence of a culture of critical and creative thinking, skills which are often not adequately developed in high schools.

The Purvanchal Pragati Samaj sponsors three institutions of higher education in Northeast India.

  • Williamnagar (Meghalala State), Loyola College offers degree programs in the Arts, Science, and Commerce streams. It is affiliated to the North East Hill University.
  • Umoid (Meghalala State), St. Xavier's College offers degree programs in Arts and Commerce. It is affiliated to the North East Hill University.
  • Phesama (Nagaland state) St. Paul's Institute of Education seeks to equip aspiring teachers with the skills they require to effective teach at the primary school level.

Together, our organizations aim to empower voices from the margins and create sustainable, community
