Laii or Vafiimai is one of the biggest villages in Senapati District, around 82 km away from the district headquarters Senapati is home to over 5500 people. The literacy rate is only 30.43%, compared to Manipur’s overall literacy rate of 76.94%. It is predominantly inhabited by the Scheduled Tribe (ST) population, constituting 92.48% of the total village population.
It is commonly agreed that education is the key to the development of any community. This is where the tribes in the hills of North East India such as Laii face a massive challenge. The tough terrain makes it difficult for proper roads and transportation to exist hence, children often have to walk more than 10 km across the hills to other villages to find schools. This makes education a matter of economics for the tribal families. Most parents just cannot afford to send their kids to school.
However, this issue can be addressed by constructing hostels that ensure children from other villages have a place where they can live without worrying about travel, food, and shelter. This enables them to pursue education without interruption and lay a solid foundation for a brighter future.
