Located among rolling hills, Pinjang Village is situated in the south-western hill regions of Manipur under the Khoupum Sub division in Noney District. About 600 people (around 75 families), primarily from the Rongmei Naga tribe, inhabit the place. Almost all the residents are subsistence farmers cultivating paddy, bananas and chillies. The average family size is around 4-5 members. The average annual income of a family is approximately Rs.50,000 - 60,000 which makes most families belong to the BPL (Below Poverty Line) category. The beautiful Leimatak River that courses through the village is a major water source for the entire population. Pinjang Village has a history of violence. It is located at the heart of a conflict-affected area and manypeople from in and around the village have been killed in the Kuki-Naga violence of the 1990s.
Founded in 2014, Sunbird Trust is a non-sectarian and non-religious Civil Society Organization striving for Peace in conflict affected parts of North East India. Core objectives of Sunbird Trust are to bring communities to live and work together in harmony and to build bridges between people and the Armed Forces. The Trust engages with local communities through educating and empowering underprivileged children.
Sunbird Trust is headed by its Founder-CEO, Col Christopher Rego (Retd.), who served 32 years in the Army, including spending over eight years in North East India. During his tenure in Manipur prior to retirement, Col Chris experienced the conflict firsthand and gained a deep knowledge of the issues that were fueling it and costing society heavily. Using this knowledge, he crystallized his strategy of “Peace Through Education”.

The bathrooms are in a dilapidated condition with mud floors, corrugated metal walls and doors and no plumbing
The budget for the construction of the Sunbird Pinjang Freindship School was approximately USD 64,000 (INR 48 Lacs). The budget for the construction of a hostel for students from remote villages was USD 20,000 (INR 15 Lacs).
