"The word 'Friendship' is not an accidental inclusion, this means that this school will serve people of all communities, religions, tribes, social and economic backgrounds. That is the endeavor and we hope to carry that to the real truth of Peace through Education".
Col Chris Rego, Founder &CEO of Sunbird Trust
Laii or Vafiimai is one of the biggest villages in Senapati District, around 82 km away from the district headquarters Senapati is home to over 5500 people.
It is commonly agreed that education is the key to the development of any community. This is where the tribes in the hills of North East India such as Laii face a massive challenge. These villages are scattered across the different valleys separated by the hills. The tough terrain makes it difficult for proper roads and transportation to exist hence, children often have to walk more than 10 km across the hills to other villages to find schools. This makes education a matter of economics for the tribal families. Most parents just cannot afford to send their kids to school.
However, this issue can be addressed by constructing hostels that ensure children from other villages have a place where they can live without worrying about travel, food, and shelter. This enables them to pursue education without interruption and lay a solid foundation for a brighter future.
Col. Chris Rego, Brig. Vaibhav Shinde, Fr. Solomon Thezii and Fr. Dominic Kanmi inaugurated the hostel on 9 April 2023
The inauguration was blessed by the presence of sisters from the Aa of Imphal
The Sunbird Trust and Learn for life foundation helped raise the corpus needed to fund the construction of the new hostel
Vafiimai Friendship Hostel will house children from Laii and neighboring villages
The hostel is currently accommodating a total of 16 residents. Among these, there are 12 boys and 4 boys
The warden oversees the living, learning and safety of all the students
The kitchen staff is responsible for preparing nutritious meals and maintaining the cleanliness of the kitchen area.
It started with a request from the Diocese of Imphal to build a new school for the tribal children in Pinjang in December 2021. Sunbird Trust and Learn for Life Foundation swung into action and in less than six months the funds were raised, the land levelled and a new school was built from the foundation up, thanks to the incredible efforts of the diocese leadership and local leaders and volunteers..
A special thank you to all the patrons and donors who made large and small donations which helped us reach our budget within two weeks of making the initial request. Your generous contributions will help educate generations of children and bring peace to this war-torn region of India. Thank you!
