In Communities Like Adhorghat, Education Takes Courage
A remote village in Meghalaya, heavy monsoon rains can cause rivers to swell and surrounding areas to flood, disrupting everyday life and isolating the community. For schoolchildren, the journey to education can become especially difficult. Flooded paths and rising waters can force children to wade through water or depend on boats to reach school.
For these children, attending school is about more than simply getting to the classroom. It means navigating difficult conditions, overcoming obstacles, and remaining committed to learning despite the challenges around them. These circumstances highlight the importance of accessible, safe, and reliable educational facilities for children in remote communities.
A School Built for the Needs of Adhorghat
To help children access education without undertaking difficult journeys through flooded paths and rivers, Learn for Life Foundation and Sunbird Trust supported the establishment of a school within the Adhorghat community.
However, the village’s remote location and limited road access made transporting heavy construction materials difficult. As a practical solution, the school was built using aluminium sheets instead of conventional bricks, creating a dedicated learning space where children can study closer to home.

Prior to Learn for Life Foundation's and Sunbird Trust's combined intervention, the students in the East Khalsi Hills did not have a school to attend, given the myriad difficulties presented by poor transportation infrastructure and severe weather. Workers carried aluminum and reinforced steel building materials manually to construct the first primary school serving the children of Adhorghat.

For the students of Ramakrishna Mission Lower Primary School, Adhorghat, every school day is a chance to learn, play, make friends, and dream. Their smiles and enthusiasm reflect the joy of student life in a close-knit rural community.

The new classroom at Ramakrishna Mission Lower Primary School, Adhorghat provides students with a brighter, more secure space to learn. For children in this remote community, the new school building is an important step toward creating better opportunities through education.
