LAII: At A Glance
- The Laii (Vafiimai) Hostel in Senapati District, Manipur, provides safe housing and educational access for children from the remote Poumai tribal community, where poverty, geographic isolation, and limited infrastructure have contributed to literacy rates far below the state average.
- Developed by Sunbird Trust and Learn for Life Foundation, the hostel serves students from Laii and neighboring villages, with a special emphasis on expanding educational opportunities for girls.
- Prior to the Hostel's construction, students trekked for hours to reach their school, often forgoing the commute altogether during periods of sectarian violence.
- By providing a structured residential environment, academic support, and value-based education, the program helps remove barriers to learning and equips young people with the skills, confidence, and opportunities needed to contribute to the long-term development of their communities.
